Regional Field Officer (RFO) Visit to Chad

November/December 2022

March 01, 2023

Before I left for Chad, I purposefully did not check any travel advice or recent news on the state of the country. I have done so since returning and can see why some were concerned about my visit. It really is a nation with a number of challenges. However, the Lord sustained and equipped us for the task ahead. I will not go into the specific incidents now, but the assignment was unlike anything I have done before.

We did not know what to expect contacting the local Gideon camps after some 10+ years since a visit from a Regional Field Officer. What we found was extraordinary – thriving camps just doing the ministry in their small corner of the world. Camps were meeting weekly at 5am for prayer, speaking in churches (one camp speaking in 27 of a possible 30 churches), signing new members, placing Scriptures, setting goals and paying dues. Many Gideons are striving to earn sufficient funds to be able to afford lifetime membership with a good few already attaining it. “But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.” (1 Corinthians 1:27)

“What we found was extraordinary – thriving camps just doing the ministry in their small corner of the world.”

One camp I visited was 3 days’ travel from the capital. Biltine is a 95% Muslim area not far from where an Australian/French national was abducted in late 2022. It is a tough place, not far from the border with Sudan. I met with the 3 pastors there and 4 Gideons that were left. They placed 700 Scriptures last year in a Muslim town in the middle of the desert. They were thrilled to read in the prayer calendars I brought with me that Gideons, Friends and donors around the world were encouraged to pray for the country of Chad on the 20th of every month.

Friends, this ministry works, we just have to go back to doing the basics. Thanks for your prayer support. James 5:16 tells us that “the prayer of a righteous man has great power as it is working.” And we are clothed in Christ`s righteousness, thank God.
